Abstract

The characteristics of active earth pressure changing with the displacement of the retaining wall are considered, and the relationship between the outer friction angles and the wall movement is introduced. The formula for the most unfavourable angle is established. The use of the energy method for calculating the earth pressure against the rigid retaining wall is discussed, and the formula based on the energy method is improved.Comparison of the calculated results with the measured results from the example shows that the improved formula can provide a good prediction of the active earth pressure behind the rigid retaining wall under the translation mode.
