CT Manifestations of Appendix Abscess

【Objective】To investigate the diagnostic value of CT for the appendix abscess. 【Methods】CT manifestations of 25 cases with the appendix abscess were retrospectively analyzed.The diagnosis was proved by operation and pathology.【Results】CT findings of the appendix abscess appeared localized and irregular masses with miscellany density in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen in 17 cases.The abscess had a clouding border and the bowels around it were adhered in 15 cases,and the border was clear and deformity of ascending colon in 2 cases.There were masses with miscellany density in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen with the bowel wall of cecum and ascending colon increased in 4 cases.There was the patch or network nidus in fat around the cecum in 4 cases,pelvic effusion in 3 cases.The abscess was obviously enhanced on contrast enhanced CT scanning. There were irregular and annular intensification in 19 cases and patching in 6 cases.【Conclusion】CT findings of appendix abscess show localized and irregular masses with miscellany density in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen.In the major cases,the diagnosis could be obtained by CT findings and clinical history.Definite diagnosis depends on operation and pathology.
