Abstract
Objective: To explore the diagnostic value of real-time ultrasonography for peripheral abscess of appendix. Methods: The clinical data of 46 patients with pathologically confirmed peripheral abscess of appendix receiving real-time ultrasonography in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed to determine their ultrasonographic features. Results: The ultrasonic manifestations of the appendiceal area were no echo or mixed echo masses at the low position. Appendiceal lumen bezoar was found in 25 cases, effusion surrounding vermiform appendix in 19, visible effusioin in intestinal clearance and right iliac fossa in 11, Psoas major muscle and soft tissue thickening surrounding the appendix in 15, appendix peritoneal thickening in 8 and appendix adjacent bowel distension forming a complete or incomplete intestinal obstruction in 6. Conclusion: Real-time ultrasonography is of important diagnostic value for peripheral abscess of appendix examination.
