Abstract

Objective:To analyze 78 cases(93 eyes) of pterygium by operative treatment in our hospital and to explore the curative effect of pterygium excision with limbal stem cell autograft transplantation for treatment of pterygium.Methods:78 cases(93 eyes) were divided into two groups randomly.36 patients(45 eyes) with primary pterygium were treated by simple excision technique patients;42 patients(48 eyes) with primary pterygium were treated by limbal stem cells autografting technique. Results:Recurrent rate was 13.3% and corneal epithelium were recovered with(5.83±0.84) days in simple pterygium excision group, but in the therapeutic group the recurrent rate was 2.08% and corneal epithelium were recovered with(3.02±0.79) days. There was statistically significant difference in the recurrence rate between the patients who underwent simple excision and those who underwent limbal conjunctival autografting(P0.05).Conclusion:Limbal stem cells autografting is an effective surgical technique for the treatment of primary pterygium. It has a low recurrence rate when compared with the simple excision technique.
