Abstract

Whipple shield hypervelocity impact tests were conducted at the FD-18A Hypervelocity Impact range of HAI,CARDC.Projectiles are LY-12 aluminum spheres with impact velocity of 4.5km/s and impact angle of 0°.Ballistic limit parameters of the shield were obtained in the approach of fixing impact velocity, varying projectile diameter, seeking the critical diameter. The critical projectile diameter in the test is 0.35cm,which is greater than that of 0.27cm predicted by Christiansen.
