Abstract

Objectives To explore the significance of serum level of C-reactive protein(CRP)and relationship between CRP and the pediatric patients with bacterial and viral respiratory tract infections. Methods A meta-analysis of data collected from domestic reports concerning respiratory tract infection of childhood was made to study the significance of serum levels of CRP in bacterial and viral infections. Results The level of serum CRP in children with bacterial infection was 2.33-3.94 times higher than children with viral infection(P0.00001),and it was 2.44-3.60 times higher than control group. The level of serum CRP in children with viral infection was 0.40-0.96 times higher than control group(P0.00001).Conclusions Serum CRP level is valuable for early recognition of bacterial infection and can guide antibiotic use,and help to reduce abuse of antibiotics.
