Abstract
Objective To compare the clinical effects of sealed gariicin and sealed formocresol (FC) on chronic periapical periodontitis treatment. Methods A total of 172 teeth with chronic penapical periodontitis were identified. The pulp chambers were opened, pulp tissues removed, and root canals were thoroughly cleaned. The teeth were then randomly divided into two groups, 78 teeth were treated by a sealed small FC cotton ball in the root canal entrance as the control group; 94 teeth were treated by a sealed small gariicin cotton ball in the root canal entrance as the experimental group. The effects were evaluated through clinical examinations. Results Three days after treatment, the incidence rate of an acute reaction was 10.7% breaking down to 5.1 % in anterior teeth ( P 0.05); 8.0% and 5.1% in posterior teeth ( P 0.05) for the FC and gariicin groups, respectively. Conclusion There is no statistical difference between the incidence of an acute reaction between the experimental and control group. The study suggests that gariicin may be useful in root canal therapy to disinfect the root canal because of its strong bactericidal characteristics and wide antibiotic spectrum.
