Clinical effects on treatment of patients with Class II malocclusion by Forsus appliance

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects of skeletal and dental changes of Angle's Class Ⅱ patients with retrusive mandible treated by Forsus appliance. Methods Twelve patients with Class Ⅱmalocclusion (age ranging from 11 to 15) were treated by Forsus appliance in the early permanent dentition. Lateral Cephalometric films were taken at the beginning and in the end of the treatment. Cephalometric analyses were used to evaluate the effects of treatment. Results After 4-7 month(average 6 months) treatment, Class Ⅱ malocclusion relationships were corrected to Class Ⅰin all patients. Overjet decreased from 6.7 mm to 1.2 mm and overbite decreased from 6.3 mm to 1.3 mm, and the profiles of patients were improved. The skeletal changes were increased significantly in B,pg,and Co. The presences of skeletal changes were 38.2% in the total changes of overjet and 32.3% in the total changes of molar's relationship. The changes of mandibular plane angle and lower facial height were not significant. And the mandibular and maxillary biteplanes were clockwise rotated along with intrusion of upper molar and extrusion of lower molar. Conclusion Forsus appliance was effective to correct Class Ⅱ malocclusion in growth modification.
