The treatment experience of delayed infection in 11 cases of fracture after internal fixation

Objective To summarize the experience in the treatment of delayed infection of fracture after internal fixation. Methods 11 cases of delayed infection of fracture after internal fixation, were given intravenous broad spectrum antibiotics administration, local irrigation, internal fixator removal and continuous drainage. Results No recurrence of infection was found in 10 mouths' (6～24 mouths) follow-up. All fractures healed. Conclusions Delayed infection is caused by contamination during primary operation, and it’s low-virulent infection. If diagnosis confirmed, satisfactory outcome can be obtained with focus clearance, internal fixator removal and antibiotics administration.
