Abstract

A certain economic pattern is the base of the existence and the development of higher education or higher education institutions. The functions of higher education, which reflect the relationship between the society and higher education institutions, therefore are subject to economic patterns and change along with the transition of economic patterns. The functions of higher education institutions in the three types of economic patterns vary. Some features could be found in the changes of higher education functions along with the transition of economic patterns: the economic pattern is the major social base and the main motivity of the existence and evolution of higher education function; the development of knowledge and the changes of the value and effects of knowledge cause direct changes of the functions of higher education institutions; the higher education or higher education institutions have been gradually socialized in the evolution process of modem higher education institutions functions ; the connotation and the structure of higher education institutions also have been diversified and perfected in this process.
