Comments on Phonetic Notations in Shijing (诗经)

The initial purpose of Zheng Xuan' s(郑玄) Book Maoshi Yin(毛诗音 ) was to make phonetic notations for Shijing(诗经), which achieved mainly through analogies. In Interpretation the Chassics (经典释文), phonetics for Shijing(诗经), a heritage from the Six Dynasties (六朝 ), has been well preserved. Phonetic notations in Shijing(诗经) can be traced to traditional illustration by Fanqie (反切 ) but not confined to it. In case of differences between ancient and contemporary pronunciations, the latter shall be looked up to as the standard. Please be noted that the pronunciation is decided according to the meaning of each word, if there is any difference between Mao Shi (毛诗) and Zheng Shi (郑诗).
