Philological Studies on the Phonetic Notation of Xuanying’s Pronuncition and Meaning in Yiqie Classics

There are various arguments among academic circle about phonetic notations on Xuan Ying Yin Yi. This paper comments on these arguments, believing that the reason why Xuan Ying criticized the shortcomings of the previous phonetic notations was because he tried to get correct notations, taking the accepted linguistic code as criteria. Xuanying's notations quoted both Yunji and other phonetic collections. His notations pointed out that there were differences among places such as North, South and Shandong, ect. He made dialect opposite to the common language. This showed that he had his own standard in explaining expressions, by which he gave phonetic notations.
