Abstract

This paper discusses the pros and cons of Optimality Theory(OT)from the perspective of the development of phonological theories. It examines its foundation background, basic principles,as well as the theoretical claims of the advantages of OT over rule-based phonology. It also exposes the problems OT faces through the analysis of opacity, absolute ungrammaticality, free variation,over-generation,constraints conspiracy, and universality.Additionally, the paper discusses the means to evaluate linguistic theories based on tone sandhi data from Chinese dialects.
