Abstract
Objective To study the expression of NES1 in breast tumor and its role on tumorigenesis. Methods The expression of NES1 was detected by using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry to analyze the matched samples from 43 cases of malignant or benign breast tumors. Results The expression of NES1 in benign lesions is significantly higher than that in malignant tumors (P0.05); six patients (75%) treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy showed increment of expression in NES1. Conclusions NES1 could be served as a novel tumor suppressor gene and molecular marker. Inactivation of NES1 gene expression may be linked to oncogenesis. Preoperative chemotherapy could help to change its expression in breast carcinoma. Further studies would be necessary in order to use NES1 expression as a reliable diagnostic and/or prognostic marker in breast cancer.
