Abstract

Objective To explore the methods to prevent intradialytic hypotension at hemodialysis. Methods A single-blinded, crossover study design of four different protocols was undertaken in 10 hemodialysis patients with a prior history of intradialytic hypotension. Each patient undergoing standard hemodialysis for two weeks was subjected to another three test protocols such as sodium modeling dialysis, ultrafiltration followed by dialysis and low temperature dialysis, each for two weeks. Results There were significantly fewer hypotensive episodes and nursing interventions in the sodium modeling and low temperature protocols as compared with the standard one. Ultrafiltration followed by dialysis was associated with a significantly greater number of hypotensive episodes and nursing interventions than any of the two test protocols. Conclusion In combating intradialytic hypotension, sodium modeling and low temperature proctocols are more effective than ultrafiltration dialysis.
