Abstract
The synthesis of benzyl benzoate from sodium benzoate and benzyl chloride by phase transfer catalysis is studied. The nucleophilic substitution reaction performance of several quaternary ammonium salts phase transfer catalyst is investigated. The results show that a kind of quaternaries phase transfer catalyst(C4H9)4 NI is good for synthesis of benzyl benzoate.Under the conditions of 1∶1.3 molar ratio of sodium benzoate to benzyl chloride, the reaction temperature is 110℃,the reaction time is 2.5~3.0 hours, the amount of catalyst is 6% of sodium benzoate, the yield of benzyl benzoate can reach more than 90%.
