Abstract
The synthesis of benzyl benzoate from sodium benzoate and benzyl chloride by phase transfer catalysis process is studied in the article. The nucleophilic substitution reaction performances of several quaternary ammonium salt phase transfer catalysts are examined. The results show that with a kind of well performed quaternary ammonium salt phase transfer catalyst,[(C4H9)4NI],under the conditions of molar ratio of sodium benzoate to benzyl chloride of 1∶1.3,reaction temperature of 110℃,reaction time of 2.5~3.0 h,catalyst dosage of 6% sodium benzoate and pH value of 5~6,the yield of benzyl benzoate is more than 90%.
