Analysis of epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus infection among blood donors in Hangzhou of Zhejiang province

OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence rate of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infection among the blood donors so as to explore the strategies to ensure the blood safety under current situation.METHODS The blood donors were screened in the blood center of Zhejiang province between 2005 and 2010.The positive samples were confirmed by Zhejiang Center of Disease Control and Prevention,and the epidemiology investigation and statistical analysis were carried out for the positive cases.RESULTS Among totally 873230 blood donors between 2005 and 2010,75 were identified as HIV positive.HIV infections among voluntary blood donors were increasing in Hangzhou in recent years,the overall HIV infection rate was 0.009%,reaching up to 0.019% in 2010,the most prevalent HIV infected individuals were males with less than 40 years of age,94.7% of which were infected through the sexual contact.Most of the cases were with single infections,the rest were co-infected with TP,HCV,HBV.Among the first-time blood donors and the once-again blood donors,the incidence rate of HIV infections was 61.8% in the first-time blood donors.CONCLUSION The prevalence rate of HIV infection among blood donors in Hangzhou of Zhejiang province is significantly lower than that among the general population,but it keeps an upward tendency.Health assessments of blood donation and consultations prior to donation should be strengthened,the identification for the high-risk donors should be enhanced,the health education for voluntary blood donation in publicity would be required,and development of stable low-risk blood donation teams should be recommended.
