The Decomposition of Energy Consumption Growth——During the Process of China's Urbanization:1985-2006

What are characteristics of China's energy consumption in its urbanization? In the paper,the total energy consumption is differentiated between life and production.Then a new method of energy decomposition analysis is proposed,which absorbs the kernel of SDA(structure decomposition analysis),simply and practically,to decompose the changes of production energy consumption of China from 1985 to 2006.It is concluded that production energy consumption has always played an overwhelming role in total energy consumption during the past 20 years of fast urbanization in China,while life energy consumption has begun stepping up.Another conclusion is that industrial structure effect has increased rather than decreased China's total energy consumption which is on a stage of important scale expansion in past 20 years;and the advancement of technology has always been decreasing total energy consumption.Furthermore,China has great potential of saving energy consumption,which not only originates from the advancement of technology,but also from the adjustment of industrial structure.In the aspect of production energy consumption,China should carry out comprehensive energy savings measures both in high energy consuming industries and fast growing industries.
