Abstract

The rising of medieval towns is a remarkable characteristics in the Western Europe different from the feudal China.By comparing them from three points: the origin of city and town,the contains of town's concept,and the organizations of common people in city and town,it is argued that the medieval towns in Western Europe were a kind of more independent social and political unit,and they can gather more and more factors breaking against feudal system.On the contrary,China's cities and towns were the fortresses for defending feudal system.
