Abstract

A well-defined graft copolymer of styrene(St) and methyl methacrylate(MMA) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization with CuCl/TMEDA as catalyst and the copolymer of styrene and p-chloromethyl styrene(p-CMS) as macroinitiator, which was synthesized by copolymerization of St and p-CMS with AIBN as initiator.Structures of these copolymers,i.e.P(St-co-CMS) and P(S-g-MMA),were confirmed by means of IR and ~1HNMR after purification. The average graft number, the average length of side chains, the graft ratio and the graft efficiency were also investigated. The results showed that the relative molecule weight distribution of P(S-g-MMA) was narrow, the number and length of grafts can be controlled, and the graft efficiency was as high as 93.7%.
