Abstract

Objective:To observe the effect of in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)-embryo transfer (ET) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Methods:From Oct 2001 to April 2005,there were 46 infertility patients with PCOS(52 cycles)who underwent IVF-ET or ICSI in our IVF-center,An age-matched group of 62 women with tubal mechanical factors who received 68 treatment cycles during the same period served as controls.Their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed with the number of retrieved oocytes, fertilization rate, embryo implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate and the occurrence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).Results:Significantly more oocytes were retrieved (18.3±8.8 versus 13.8±5.9) but a smaller percentage of fertilization in PCOS group (57.1% versus 75.7%),and the implantation rate and the clinical pregnancy rate did not differ (17.3% versus 26.2%,28.0% versus 42.6%),when compared to control group. The difference of the occurrence of OHSS was not significantly (11.5% versus 5.9%) between the two groups.Conclusions:IVF-ET is an effective management for the infertile patients with PCOS after the conventional methods failed to be conceived; The occurrence of OHSS can be controlled effectively after positive treatment.
