Abstract

Objective:To investigate the effects of irbesartan on insulin resistance and left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with essential hypertension. Methods:The concentrations of fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, and C peptide(CP) were measured in 32 hypertensive patients and 20 control healthy subjects.Irbesartan was used to treat hypertension for 21 weeks and the insulin sensitivity index(ISI) of each group was calculated and compared.Echocardiography was examined before and after 21 weeks of treatment. Results:After 21 weeks treatment of irbesartan, blood pressure was reduced significantly ( P 0.01).ISI was increased( P 0.01).Interventricular septum thickness and left ventricular posterior wall thickness, left ventricular mass and index of left ventricular mass were improved significantly ( P 0.01). Conclusion:Irbesartan can lower significantly blood pressure, and improve the insulin resistance and left ventricular hypertrophy in treatment of essential hypertension. [
