Abstract

Objective To investigate the antibiotic resistance of clinical isolates from Hubei province to antimicrobial agents commonly used during 2007.Methods Disk diffusion method was used to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility. Data were analyzed by WHONET 5.4 software. Results A total of 21,004 clinical isolates were colleted, including gram-positive cocci 36.0% and gram-negative bacilli 63.5%. The top six pathogens were E. coli,coagulase-negative Staphylococcus,P. aeruginosa,S. aureus,Klebsiella spp and Acinetobacter spp. The prevalence of MRSA and MRCNS was 54.0% and 57.5%,respectively. None of gram-positive cocci was found resistant to glycopeptides. The resistant rates of Enterobacteriaceae to cefoperazone-sulbactam,piperacillin-tazobactam and amikacin were lower than 30%. No strain was found resistant to carbapenem. ESBLs-producing strains accounted for 57.2 %,37.8% and 8.9% in E. coli,Klebsiella spp. and P. mirabilis. Not more than 30 % of P. aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp. isolates were resistant to imipenem or cefoperazone-sulbactam. About 22.1% and 39.9% of these isolates were resistant to meropenem. More Acinetobacter spp. isolates were resistant to ceftazidime and cefepime than P. aeruginosa. About 3 % to 23.3% of S. maltophilia isolates were resistant to SMZ-TMP,levofloxacin or minocycline. Conclusions Two thirds of these clinical isolates are gram-negative bacilli, for which carbapenems are highly active. The resistance to most antimicrobial agents is increasing in the clinical isolates from Hubei province.
