Abstract

The similarity of popular sovereignty of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Benjamin Constant lies in they both used liberty as its logic point and end.The differences of their popular sovereignty consist in Is the popular sovereignty limited or unlimited,Whether is the popular sovereignty divided,Is the realization form of popular sovereignty direct democracy or representative democracy.By criticizing the popular sovereignty of Rousseau,Benjamin Constant turns the abstract theory of popular sovereignty into the concrete theory of popular sovereignty.The abstract popular sovereignty must be turned into concrete systems,or it may become the tool of tyranny.
