Abstract

Objective To investigate the level of serum leptin in diet-and insulin-controlled pregnants with GDM.Methods Twenty cases received diet-controlled were enrolled for the study as group Ⅰ,14 received insulin-controlled as group Ⅱ and 20 normal pregnant women served as controls. The level of leptin, insulin and glycosylated haemoglobin values(HbA1c) in the serum were examined. Results Maternal diabetes was associated with marked increase in leptin, insulin and HbA1c of serum than the controls. The release of leptin and insulin was significantly greater in group Ⅰ compared with group Ⅱ(F=7.22-18.75,q=4.07-8.66,P0.01).Maternal diabetes was associated with marked elevation of leptin and insulin in cord blood, especially in group Ⅱ(F=25.10,20.38;q=4.00-9.97;P0.01).There was a significant correlation between leptin and insulin levels in cord blood(r=0.41-0.45,P0.05).Conclusion Leptin and insulin levels are significantly higher in GDM.The increase of leptin levels may be due to the stimulatory effect of insulin.Dysregulation of leptin metabolism and/or function may be implicated in the pathogenesis of GDM.
