Whether Sarah Would be Free after Encountering Rossetti——To Analyze the Heroine's Future After the Encounter in The French Lieutenant's Woman

One of the double ends in John Fowls' The French Lieutenant's Woman suggests Sarah meets Rossetti,the representative of freedom,and their encounter seems to imply that the heroine Sarah would go beyond the 19th-century Victorian social constraints on women,and obtain her ultimate freedom.However,this paper,from the point of the inevitability of Sarah's encountering Rossetti,to analyze this freed woman,seemingly going ahead of the times with a distinct sense of female independence,and standing proudly as a new woman as well,once behind the powerful patriarchal figure of Dante Rossetti,points out that she could not shake off the shackles of male-centered consciousness of that times and gain her real freedom.
