The therapeutic efficacy and safety of tiapride and haloperidol in treatment of Tourette syndrome

Objective To explore the therapeutic efficacy and safety of tiapride and haloperidol in treatment of Tourette syndrome(TS).Methods Seventy-one children with TS were randomized divided into tiapride group(n=35,150-300 mg/d) and haloperidol group(n=36,1.5-6 mg/d,with equal dose of artane).The total treatment duration of the two groups was 12 weeks.The therapeutic efficacies and safety were assessed by Yale global tic severity scale(YGTSS) and treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS) before and at 12 weeks treatment.Results There were significant differences in total tic scores,comprehensive impairment scores and total YGTSS scores before and after treatment in both groups(P0.01).However,there were no difference in total tic scores,comprehensive impairment scores and total YGTSS scores between two groups(P0.05).The TESS score were significantly higher in haloperidol group than that in tiapride group(P0.05).Conclusions Tiapride and haloperidol have same therapeutic efficacies in treatment of TS;however tiapride is well tolerated with mild side effects.
