On the Gains and Losses of Huang Ting-jian's Learning from Du Fu

Huang Ting-jian thinks highly of Du Fu and his poems.He admires not only Du Fu's thoughts,but also his artistic skill.He cites widely allusions from Du's poems,likes to use Du's rhyme in his own poems and pays more attention to learn from Du's syntax.However,Huang has some limitations in learning from Du,for example,he likes to cite rare allusions,pursuing purposely peculiarity in syntax and form and having the tendency of taking prose as poem.His theme of poems is limited and his horizon is narrow.He lacks affection charm and doesn't care much about people's bitterness and sufferings.These are the limitations of his learning from Du Fu and the weaknesses of his poems.
