Abstract

During the reign of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, it was imperative that a guiding principle was needed for strengthening the emperor's power, for expanding the empire's territory and for keeping the social order. Confucianism was chosen for serving those purposes. Interpreted by Confucian scholars, the coronation ceremony not only became the symbol in setting up the unified religious rituals and the supreme authority of the emperor, but also declared the orthodoxy of Confucianism in the state's administration.
