Effect of diastolic blood pressure on cardio-cerebral vascular events in elderly hypertensive patients after antihypertensive treatment

Abstract

Objective To study the relation between diastolic blood pressure(DBP) and cardio-cerebral vascular events in elderly hypertensive patients and to observe whether there is aJ-shaped curvefor diastolic pressure.Methods One thousand and ten elderly hypertensive patients were divided into65 mm Hg(l mm Hg=0.133 kPa) group(group 1,n = 68),65—69 mm Hg group (group 2,n=154),70—74 mm Hg group(group 3,n = 334),75—79 mm Hg group(group 4,n= 235),80—84 mm Hg group(group 5,n = 148),and 85—89 mm Hg group(group 6,n = 71)according to their DBP after antihypertensive treatment.Effect of DBP on cardio-cerebral vascular events was analyzed using the Cox proportional risk model.Results The incidence of cardio-cerebral vascular events was 68%,184%,203%in groups 4—6,which was higher than that in group 2 after the adjustment of traditional risk factors(P0.05,P0.01).No significant difference was found in the incidence of cardio-cerebral vascular events between group 1 and other groups,although it tended to increase in group 1.Conclusion Cardio-cerebral vascular events tend to decrease when the DBP decreases to 65—69 mm Hg after antihypertensive treatment.
