Abstract
Objective To study the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance urography (MRU) in upper urinary tract obstruction ( UUTO ) in children. Methods 27 children with UUTO were subjected to IVU,BUS and MRU preoperatively. The heavily T 2-weighted fat suppression turbo spin echo sequence was employed in MRU. The MRU data were analyzed and compared with surgical findings, and MRU results were compared with IVU and BUS in terms of defining both the nature and level of UUTO.Results With MRU,the diagnosis of stricture of ureteropelvic junction was established in 12 children, and duplication of renal pelvis and ureter in 3 children, primary megaloureter in 7 and narrowness of cystic inlet of ureter in 5. MRU findings were found to be completely consistent with surgical findings, with an accuracy of 100% in defining the nature and level of UUTO.Conclusion MRU is of great value in the diagnosis of upper urinary tract obstruction in children.
