Abstract
Objective To analyze the etiological factors in non traumatic vitreous hemorrhage and to investigate the clinical outcomes of vitrectomy in non traumatic vitreous hemorrhage eyes. Methods The etiological factors, anatomic success rate, and recovery rate of visual functions in a total of 47 patients (51 eyes) undergoing vitrectomy with follow up records from July 1998 to September 2000 in our department were analyzed retrospectively. Results Vitreous hemorrhage was found in 18 eyes of diabetic retinopathy, 16 eyes of Eales' disease, and 12 eyes of retinal vein occlusion, amounting to 90.20% of the total eyes. The anatomic success rate and recovery rate of visual functions after operation were 94.12% and 54.90%, respectively. There was significant difference in visual acuity before and after operation ( P 0.01). Conclusion Diabetic retinopathy, Eales disease, and retinal vein occlusion are the main etiological factors in non wound vitreous hemorrhage. Vitrectomy is an effective way for vitreous hemorrhage.
