Abstract

Cognitive linguistics is an approach to the study of natural language that focuses on language as an instrument for organizing, processing, and conveying information. As a novel approach or school, cognitive linguistics will unavoidably result in some misunderstandings. In order to clear up these misunderstandings, this paper attempts to explicate and discuss several issues, which include the philosophical bases and working hypotheses of cognitive linguistics, its uniqueness in cognitive science, and its social and pragmatic dimensions.
