The value of diffusion-weighted MRI in differentiating acute from non-acute cerebral infarction

Abstract

Objective:To assess the value of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging(DWI) in differentiating acute from non acute cerebral infarction.Methods:41 patients with cerebral infarction (12 acute,14 subacute,15 chronic)were imaged with DWI and conventional MRI.Results:Acute and subacute cerebral infarction showed hyperintensity on DWI.Acute cerebral infarction in 8 cases was demonstrated clearer and larger on DWI than that on conventional T 2WI.All chronic cerebral infarction showed isointensity,mixed intensity or hypointensity on DWI.Conclusion:DWI is reliable in differentiating acute from non acute cerebral infarction.
