A Discussion on Xu Kai’s Revision of Pictophonetic Characters in Xizhuan and Its Influence on Xu Xuan

Abstract

Xukai’s revision of pictophonetic characters is one part of the study on Shuowen.There are two aspects which we need to pay attention to: one is his mistake of being intangible to ancient sound and giving too much emphasis to word’s meaning,especially the later;the other is his achievement of discovering meaning of some pictophonetic characters by revising them.For it’s value,some opinions from Xu Kai were adopted by Xu Xuan in Daxu Ben.
