Xu Xuan's notes are mainly based on Shuowen Jiezi,and the original meaning of characters for his judgement,not on the metaphorical meaning and the phonetic loan character meaning to make a judgement. for the relations of standardized form and nonstandard form of Chinese characters. But at the same time he is not limited to Shuowen Jiezi.
