Analysis of the efficacy of microendoscopic discectomy(MED) for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation

Abstract

Objective To investigate the efficacy of microendoscopic discectomy(MED) for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.Methods A retrospective analysis was made on 32 cases of lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion treated by microendoscopic discectomy.Results Among 32 cases,27 cases treated by microendoscopic discectomy were followed for 4~54 months,the curative outcomes were excellent in 24 cases,good in 3 cases.The blood loss was 30~400 ml(mean 120 ml).The mean length of incision was 2 cm.Five conversions to open surgery were required.The cauda equina nerve damage was found in 1 case,dural injury in 1 case,hematomyelia in 3 cases.Conclusion Microendoscopic discectomy for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation has advantages of mini-incision,minimal invasion,less blood loss,thorough decompression for the nerve root,little effects on spinal stability,and quick recovery.But patients are likely to develop more complications.
