Abstract
Global Positioning System(GPS),a satellite-based navigation system, has a variety of applications on land,at sea and in the air.GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world,24 hours a day.It can be used in collecting data, monitoring nuclear explosion as well as emergency assistance. The civilian use of GPS develops very rapidly. The common civilian application of GPS is the car navigation system, the more sophisticated systems which determine a vehicle′s location, then show it on a display map.The system allow a driver to keep track of where he is and suggest the best route to follow to reach a destination. The essay focuses on the special features, principles and applications of GPS,along with the components, functions and diversities of the car navigation system.
