Abstract

Objective To study expression of mdr 1 gene product P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in primary hepatocelular carcinoma (PHC) and its adjacent liver tissues, analyze the mechanism of multidrug resistance (MDR) of PHC. Methods Using immunohistochemical S-P method, expression of P-gp was detected in 24 untreated PHC and their adjacent liver tissue, 36 treated PHC and their adjacent liver tissue, 20 portal cirrhosis tissues and 20 normal liver tissues. Results Expression of Pgp in untreated PHC, treated PHC and non-malignant liver tissue is 66.67%, 80.56% and 90.00% respectively, without significant difference in untreated PHC, treated PHC and non-malignant liver tissue. All untreated and treated tumor adjacent liver tissues expressed Pgp. Pgp expression in PHC may be stronger, lesser than or similar to that in its tumor adjacent liver tissue. Pgp expression in PHC was not correlated with histological type and differentiation. Conclusion The MDR of PHC is derived from the intrinic MDR and inducement of chemotherapeutic agen has little effect.\;
