Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between the expression of tumor suppressor gene p16 and PTEN protein and the biologcal behaviors of colorectal cancer. Methods The expression of PTEN and p16 proteins in 55 colorectal cancer specimens was investigated with immunohistochemical technique using PTEN and p16 antibodies. The relationship between the expression of p16 and PTEN proteins and the clinicopathological parameters of colorectal cancer was analyzed. Results The frequency of expression of p16 and PTEN proteins was 70.9% and 69.0% in colorectal cancer, respectively. The expression of p16 and PTEN proteins was positively correlated with the TNM stage, differentiation degree and metastasis of colorectal cancer(P0.05 respectively). Moreover, there was a positive correlation between the p16 and PTEN protein expression in colorectal cancer(r=0.49,P0.005).Conclusions Expression of tumor suppressor gene p16 and PTEN might be helpful in predicting the biological behavior and prognosis of colorectal cancer.
