A Study of the Types of Contemporary Chinese Word Meaning Changes from the Perspective of Word Meaning Constituents

Abstract

The changes in word meaning of contemporary Chinese are embodied in all the three aspects that constitute the meaning of a word.Extension and transfer are the main forms of lexical meaning changes,while narrowing and emptying are infrequent.Degradation and elevation of affective meaning,the prominence and strengthening of imagery meaning,and the weakening and popularization of literary meaning are the main forms of stylistic meaning changes.Conversion and new usages of some degree adverbs call for attention in the respect of grammatical meaning changes.
