The internal iliac artery embolization for intractable postpartum hemorrhage.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of internal iliac artery embolization in the treatment of intractable postpartum hemorrhage.Methods 8 patients with intractable postpartum hemorrhage were treated with bilateral internal iliac artery embolization with gelfoam particles,when the catheter tip was showed to be in the appropriate position.Digital subtraction angiography(DSA) was used to show the pelvic blood vessels and the catheter tip.Results Internal iliac artery embolizations were performed successfully at the first attempt in all the 8 patients,the procedures only took a short time and stopped postpartum hemorrhage immediately.Uterus and its physiological function were reserved,no serious complications occurred.Conclusion Internal iliac artery embolization is a quick,safe and effective remedy for intractable postpartum hemorrhage.
