Abstract

Objective To evaluate the treatment outcome of new smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis(TB) patients in Xi'an since the implementation of TB Control World Bank Loan/UK Project Grants from 2003 to 2008 for sustainable development of TB contro1.Methods New smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases registered by Centre for Disease Control and Prevention at every district(county) in Xi'an city from 2003 to 2008 were followed-up and their trenatment outcome after a full year treatment were analyzed. Results There were 27996 newly registered cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis in the population of Xi'an from 2003 to 2008.With 12924 smear-positive cases,9685 were new smear-positive cases(74.7%).Of the new smear-positive cases,52% were young male farmers.Treatment of smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis was completed in 11603 cases with an average yearly cure rate of 90.5%(10506/11603).There were 616(5.3%)case with uncertain outcome at the completment of the treatment,79(0.7%)uncured,89(0.8%)dead,89(0.8%)lost to follow-up,and 160(1.4%)migrating to other residence. Conclusion Under tuberculosis trratment management norms, the source of infection is effectively controlled in Xi'an.
