Effect of occupations and smoking on semen quality of male infertility patients

Objective To explore the different occupations, smoking and other factors on the semen quality of the male infertility patients.Methods The infertility patients were surveyed for age, occupation, smoking, and living habits by questionnaire. According to the standards of WHO Human Semen and Sperm-Cervical Mucus Interaction Laboratory Manual (4th ed.), the computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was adopted, the correlation analysis of the sperm quality among the different practitioners, smokers and non-smokers were performed.Results Farmer′s sperm density was obviously lower compared with that of businessman and staff (P0.05), but sperm vitality had no significant difference among the different practitioners. There was the significant difference in the sperm density between the smokers with over 2 packets of cigarette and the people without smoking history (P0.05).Conclusion Excessive smoking affects spermatogenesis in men, the sperm density is lower in farmers.
