Abstract

Objective:To investigate the protective effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM) on the injuried spinal cord in SD rats and compare it with that of MP.Methods:All the 60 adult rats were made as hemi section models at the lumbar enlargement and divided into three groups:single spinal cord injury(SCI)group,SCI with MP treatment group,SCI with SM treatment group. The activity of SOD and the concentration of MDA of the spinal cord tissue in the injuried site were measured at 4,8,24h after reagents were intraperitoneally injected immediately following SCI.Blood rheology and motor evoked potentials(MEP) were evaluated respectively.Functional status was assessed by inclined plane test at 2,4 weeks. Results:Activity of SOD was elevated, the level of MDA and the impared microcirculation were alleviated in the mammals treated with SM(P0 01).Moreover, MEP and functional status of SM group was increased markedly as well. Conclusion:The treatment with SM can alleviate the lipid peroxidation and microcirculation aggravation resulted from secondary injury and thus showed a promising future for treatment of SCI
