On the Nature of the Chinese Characters

Abstract
The nature of the Chinese characters is discussed from three angles.Various views in the past are reviewed.Thereafter,the author presents his own point of view:firstly,the Chinese characters in ancient Chinese are morphemes;secondly,they are sounds with forms to represent meaning;thirdly,they are pictographs;fourthly,they are characters whose sounds and meanings differ;finally,they are symbols.
