Abstract

There has been a long history arguing about the nature of Chinese characters;and in fact no sharp contradiction exists. The chief reason for the numerous points has resulted from perspective data and alternative angles. If all Chinese characters are treated as a whole to reveal the attribute with respect to the forms, structures and usages, then the nature may be concluded as follows: Chinese characters are a plane square-shaped symbolic system utilized for expressing meaning, indicating the sounds, and recording the constitutive counterparts,i.e.single characters,to realize Chinese morphemes and syllables.
