Abstract

On August 4,2006,superstrong typhoon Saomai landed on Mazhan Town of Cangnan County in Zhejiang Province, with its near-central maximum wind of scale 17(60m/s) and central pressure of 920 hPa.It has been the strongest typhoon to strike China since the foundation of the People's Republic of China. However, the Saomai-induced casualties and property losses were reduced for the reason that Central Meteorological Office provided quite accurate forecast of its track and intensity and timely forecast-warning service, and that the government at all levels adopted a number of appropriate measures.Consequently, facing attacks of the superstrong typhoon whose severity has unobserved in the past one hundred years, the government should improve construction of the typhoon disaster emergency response system, scientifically design the building structures, make overall plans for the construction of public safety facilities against typhoons, and strengthen the propaganda of popular science and rescue team building.
