Abstract

Objective To investigate the surgical method for decreasing the incidence of posterior capsule opacification(PCO)after cataract surgery in children. Methods A total of 62 children with congenital cataract(68 eyes)were collected to take posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy after phacoemulsification.Intraocular lens were implanted into capsular bag at the first period of time. All patients were followed up for 2 years;Postoperative visual acuity and condition of PCO were observed. Results In 68 eyes, there were 5 eyes(7.35%)with PCO at postoperative 3 months to 2 years, average in 16 months.Corrected visual acuity was rechecked at postoperative 2 months to 3 months. There were 17 eyes with visual acuity from 0.2 to 0.4,28 eyes from 0.5 to 0.7 and 20 eyes more than 0.8.Statistical difference was found in visual acuity between before and after surgery(P0.05).There was no difference in incidence of PCO among different age groups(P0.05).No child was found with cystoid macular edema or retinal detachment. Conclusion Posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis combined with anterior vitrectomy is an effective way to prevent PCO.
